Music historians agree that the history of Bobby & the Chuxx breaks down not-so-neatly (but at least vaguely satisfyingly) into three periods. There is the formative Nonsense Period (1980-1982), characterized by songs with "pus" in the title and an insistence on returning to the "live" debut for source material. This is followed by the Gestation Period (1983-1985), the most prolific three years in Chuxx history, with six studio albums, one concept/"soundtrack" album (the Contra-inspired musical-adventure-comedy Cry, Pepita, Cry) and the band's only true live album, A Live & Livid. It is the band's move from the Dark Ages into enlightenment. Finally, there is the Maturation Period (1986-present), where we see the band refining its sound and recording style into albums that become more and more palatable, and which contain less and less filler. The "Honk Funks" and "Thorazine Shuffles" are now almost completely behind the band, and the future looks bright, if not occasionally clouded with "Filth-Inhabiting Flies," "Whiskey" and "Murder." |
